BBQ Party Planning Checklist
A practical shopping, prep, portion and serving checklist for game-day barbecue.
Plan around how many people are eating, what equipment you have, and when you want food on the table. A little math prevents both food shortages and expensive leftovers.
One week before
- Confirm guest count, age ranges, allergies and dietary preferences.
- Choose one main meat and one backup/protein alternative if needed.
- Use the servings calculator to estimate raw weight.
- Check freezer thawing time and any equipment repairs.
Two days before
- Buy fresh perishables and sufficient fuel.
- Prepare dry rubs with clean tools.
- Write a cook schedule using the backward planner.
- Verify you have working thermometers, a clean prep area, foil or food-safe paper and serving utensils.
Game day
- Separate raw protein from produce and ready-to-eat dishes.
- Monitor smoker/grill and food internal temperatures.
- Start quick sides later so they finish close to service time.
- Put chilled sides in a proper cold-holding setup; use suitable hot-holding for finished meats.
- Label any allergen-containing sauces.
After the meal
Cool and refrigerate leftovers promptly. Discard food left out beyond safe time guidance. Clean grates and surfaces once equipment is cool.
The cost calculator can estimate your budget before buying; keep a separate contingency for unexpected guests.
